Hydraulically optimum flat-bottomed power-law channel

It is difficult to optimize the shape of an open-channel for low construction, high hydraulic efficiency and the soil and rock slope stability.This research considers a new channel which is termed a flat-bottomed power-law channel on the basis of the power-law channel and has a bottom width and power-law side walls.Based on the theory of a hydraulically optimum section, an optimum flat-bottomed power-law channel design and hydraulic calculation are considered by using Lagranges method of undetermined multipliers.Shapes and parameters for hydraulically optimum flat-bottomed power-law channels are obtained under different conditions with trial procedures and numerical methods.Hydraulically optimum fiat-bottomed power-law sections are more hydraulically efficient than common optimum rectangular, trapezoidal and power-law sections.Ranges of exponent m and side slope Z are provided to guarantee soil and rock slope stability and a minimum wetted perimeter.This study may provide a useful reference for channel design.
