Gravity currents due to barged sediment disposal

Gravity currents due to the impact of sediment clouds from barge disposal are examined in the present study. In the literature, the gravity current has been modeled with either fixed volume or constant flux (i.e.continuous release) of buoyant fluid, and with the intrusion head following the Froude condition. However, with disposal of barged sediments, the gravity current will initially follow constant flux and then switch to constant volume after the sediments are fully discharged from the barge. This transition significantly affects the dynamics of the gravity current, which has not been addressed so far.In the present study, we examined the transition experimentally by releasing a fixed amount of sediment with different sizes through a model barge of varying bottom-opening dimensions.A modified Box-Model for the gravity current, which takes into account the transition, was then developed for the analysis. The model predictions were verified by the experimental data.
