Exploring the Role of Personality Traits in Determining Information Sharing Behavior in Social Media
Though personality was found to impact knowledge sharing behavior, little is studied on how these traits would influence sharing information. This paper investigated the role of personality traits in triggering information sharing behavior in the online social networking environment.WeChat, as a popular social networking software for Chinese users, is utilized as the research context.Built upon the Big-Five Personality theory, a research framework was constructed, in which information sharing behavior was subdivided into three dimensions, including browsing messages, publishing posts and posting replies.Based on 311 valid questionnaires collected from an online survey, correlation and regression analysis were applied to verify the research framework. The empirical results indicated that every dimension of personality traits (i.e.neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness) of Chinese users significantly affect their information sharing behavior online. In all, this study subdivides both personality traits and information sharing behavior to obtain characteristic dimensions, and deeply discusses the direct impact of personality traits on information sharing behavior of WeChat.
