The Evolution of Internet Public Opinion with Netizens Silence
In public events, can peoples attitudes and opinions that we see online really represent the real public opinion? Actually, an online questionnaire survey shows that a part of people will hide their own attitudes and keep silent if they get large pressure from others around them. For a further research, a model based on cellular automata for online public opinion evolution is proposed in this paper. And computer simulation results show that: 1) many netizens do not express their opinions and keep silent when in the weak side in their local community;2)the initial strong opinion seems much stronger than it really is and this situation will be more obvious when one side is much stronger than other sides;3) smaller individuals silence threshold will take more silent netizens and if individuals silence thresholds are small enough the majority of netizens will be silent and the opinions will be heavily distorted.
