Measuring Cognitive Loadin Hierarchical Auxiliary Reading of a Research Paper
Accurately measuring the cognitive load that a task imposes on a reader is important for the design and application of effective tool for auxiliary reading in digital libraries. To measure cognitive load in hierarchical auxiliary reading of a research paper, this paper conducted an experiment containing two tools, BOOKMARK which is Table of Contents (TOC)-based and THC-DAT which is topic-based, and three types of tasks including fact finding, partial understanding and full-text understanding, that evaluated 24 users cognitive load based on their eye movement indicators including fixation duration and fixation count. The results showed that different tool or task leads to different cognitive load in hierarchical auxiliary reading, and the topic-based tool is much more helpful in all tasks than the TOC-based tool by lowering cognitive load and slowing down the process of users to achieve the state of overload, which recommends topic-based tool for the design and application of auxiliary reading in digital libraries. It is also suggested that cognitive load measurement should be considered while evaluating a tool with efficiency indicators such as task completion time, because both fixation duration and fixation count will decrease after users reaching the state of overload.
