Environmental Scanning Behavior of Female Managers in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises:A Chinese Empirical Study

  The external environment, as a vital source of enterprise strategic information and resources, plays an important role in the growth of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).Environmental scanning, as a part of executive behavior, is a kind of information seeking behavior.Research on the scanning behavior of female executives has special implications for female leadership.We explored the characteristics of Chinese female SMEs managers environmental scanning behavior and the impact of cognitions on such behavior.Results show that female managers in Chinese SMEs perceived a higher degree of environmental complexity and importance than male managers.Gender differences did not lead to different scanning frequencies among Chinese SMEs managers.When female managers of Chinese SMEs perceived a higher level of strategic variability and environmental complexity, they would increase their scanning frequency.
