Experimental study on the distributions of the step length and frequency in the walking movement

The step length and frequency are two important parameters in pedestrian dynamics. The macroscopic law of the step length and frequency with the headway has been studied by some researchers. However, the distributions ot the step length and frequency at a certain headway are wide, the distribution characteristics of them has not been discussed yet, especially at high densities. In this paper, a single-file pedestrian movement experiment was conducted to analyze pedestrian motion characteristics. The trajectories of participants were extracted with an image processing method. From the features of pedestrians walking, strides can be collected from the trajectories. Thus the headway, which is the distance between the heads of two sequential pedestrians, is obtained, along with the corresponding step length and frequency. The step length and frequency are statistically analyzed. Its observed that the step length and step frequency at a certain headway satisfy the normal distribution. This may be due to that the ages of the participants in our experiment are almost the same. There is a series of normal distributions at a certain headway from 0.3m to 1.2m.According to the mean values and relative standard deviations which are the ratios between the standard deviations and the corresponding mean values, the mean value function and relative standard deviation function can be fit.The variation of step length and frequency at a certain headway by the experiment is in line with that reproducing by the fitting functions.According to the fit functions, a model is built up.The simulation result accords to that of our experiment.
