Behaviour of Ants Escaping a Single-exit Room under High Temperature Conditions

This paper is aimed at learning the rules of ant escaping behaviours in a 10 × 10 cm one-exit chamber. We use about 100 C.japonicas ants, a species of large ant as study object. In this research, ants are driven by high temperature. It is shown that ants escaped as fast as possible at the beginning of the evacuation. With the reducing of the number of the ants in the chamber, the evacuation efficiency decreases. We also find the herding phenomenon near the side of exit in the chamber but no clogging at the exit. The possible reasons of these phenomena are large pheromone and pushing effect which can improve evacuation efficiency. However, low density of ants may leave less concentration pheromone that takes ants more time to look for exit.Unlike human beings, ants do not rush to the exit simultaneously under the emergency conditions owing to the changing of motion direction when two ants touching each other, which prevents clogging at the exit. Therefore, ants can escape the chamber under high temperature conditions efficiently. Our work might contribute to understanding the swarm intelligence, and learning the relationship between human and ant behaviour.
