A Simulation of Pedestrian Side-by-Side Walking Behavior and Its Impacts on Crowd Dynamics

Small group is a common phenomenon in pedestrian crowds, but most pedestrian simulation models lack reasonable considerations of this behavior. To explicitly illustrate the modeling mechanisms of grouping behavior and explore its possible influences on crowd dynamics, an agent-based microscopic pedestrian simulation model has been introduced in this study.Besides factors such as steering, obstacle avoidance and inertial for individual pedestrian movement at locomotion level, new factors such as heading direction alignment, relative position maintenance as well as speed-matching have been considered to reproduce realistic pedestrian group movement behavior. To analyze and calibrate parameters in our model, a series of simulation tests have been conducted.First, sensitivity of a parameter called relative position angle between group members has been tested and the group formation maintenance can be explicitly illustrated. Moreover, global effects of group formation on crowds in terms of travel delays and kinetic energy consumption have been explored. At last, movement efficiencies of three types of pedestrians in environments with different densities have been evaluated.Generally, our model has been proved to be able to reproduce quantitatively plausible results in situations characterized by sideby-side walking groups of pedestrians.
