Effect of substructures on the mechanical properties of Alloy 718 weldments
The fusion zones of alloy 718 with three different weld cooling rates were analyzed. Two different types of filler metals were employed. The microsegregation phenomenon in alloy 718 fusion zone was studied with reference to the cooling rates. The high temperature mechanical properties were evaluated. The correlation between the extent of microsegregation and the reduction in the strength were quantified. However the elongation of the weldment was mainly the function of the grain refinement in the fusion zone and heat affected zone.It was found that retention of higher Molybdenum content in the matrix led to the grain refinement and improved high temperature tensile properties
