Development of Miniature Fatigue Testing Machine in Liquid Conditions

  This paper describes a miniature fatigue testing machine for small sized test specimens in liquid conditions.This type of fatigue testing machine is not available commercially so the testing machine was newly developed.The small sized specimen employed has the form of a solid cylinder with a diameter 2 mm, a gage length 4 mm and a total length 34 mm.The testing machine consists of a testing stand, an environment vessel, a liquid cooling system and a test control system.Safety devices are also installed to prevent from fire and explosion because of using combustible liquids like a petrol.Data of stroke and load on the specimen are measured by an eddy current sensor and a load cell,respectively.The maximum loading is ± 3800 N.The maximum frequency is 100 Hz at low stress amplitudes below 800 MPa and decreases in higher stress amplitudes above 800 MPa.Maximumcontrollable frequency is 50 Hz regardless of the stress amplitude in the test controlled by the control system.The cooling system employed in the fatigue testing machine is demonstrated to have a sufficient temperature control and the specimen is fractured in the gage section without bending and buckling of specimen.
