Low Cycle Fatigue Test Technique Using Small Sized Specimen of Lead Free Solders
This paper describes low cycle fatigue test results obtained by applying a test method using small-sized spccimens with 6mm gage length, 3mm diameter and 55mm total length.Strain controlled low cycle fatigue tests were carried out for two type lead-free solders using horizontal-type electrical servo hydraulic push-pull fatigue testing machine and strain ranges employed were 0.5%, 0.7%, 1.0% and 1.5%.The test temperature was 313K and an electric fumace was employed as heating device. The tested materials are Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-5Sb.The specimen was prepared by casting process in which cooling rate was controlled to corresponding to the cooling rate in reflow process.Control of testing machine and measurement of strain and stress were successful in the test using the small-sized specimen. The results for Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu were compared to those obtained using a bulk specimen in previous study.Relationship between strain range and number of cycles to failure of the small-sized specimen agreed well with those of the bulk specimens. The results confirm that the test teclnique using the small-sized specimen of lead free solders was established.
