The formation of G phase and in-service embrittlement of the centrifugally cast 20Cr32Ni1Nb alloy
A series of tensile tests, Charpy impact tests, Optical microscopy (OM) observations, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examinations were carried out to investigate the in-service embrittlement of 20Cr32NilNb alloy. The XRD pattern of the extracted powder of the as-cast specimen shows that the main precipitates are eutectic niobium carbides (NbC) and chromium carbides (M23C6).In the Ex-service samples, besides the precipitates of NbC and M23C6 carbides, the Ni-Nb silicide known as G phase (Ni16Nb6SiT) is formed as a sequence of the instability of NbC at elevated temperature, which may result in the embrittlement of service-exposed 20Cr32NilNb alloy.Based on the X-ray diffraction data, time-temperature-transformation curve of G phase was obtained in the aged 20Cr32Ni 1 Nb alloy.
