Precipitation Study of HK40 Steel at 800 and 900℃
The mierostructure changes and mechanical properties of artificially aged HK40 steel were studied under two different temperatures (800 and 900 ℃).The material was analysed in the as-cast condition and aged up to 1500 h at those temperatures. The mierostructural changes in the matrix and the precipitates were analysed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with Energy Dispersion Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction. The mechanical properties were characterized using Rockwell C Hardness test (HRC) and nanoindentation tests.Thermo-Calc software was used to simulate the pseudobinary equilibrium diagrams, as well as the as-cast phases at the proposed temperatures to compare with the microstructural characterization.Thermo-Calc results showed a good agreement with the microstructural characterization. The dissolution of primary M7C3 carbides and precipitation of M23C6 secondary carbides was clearly observed during aging at both temperatures. The macrohardness results showed an increasing tendency with the aging time and subsequently a reduction in hardness as result of the coarsening process. It is important to point out that nanoindentation results showed that the matrix ductility increased with aging time
