Study on the Adsorption of Congo Red by Modified Cotton Shell in Organic dyes
An adsorbent from cotton shell was obtained from esterification by methanol. The functional groups andthe changes of surface structures were characterized using SEM and FTIR.The initial concentration of congo red, effects of adsorbent dosage, pH value of solution on the adsorption capacity were investigated. The kinetics of adsorption was explored by a large number of experiments. The results showed that adsorption amount was increased with enhancing the adsorption time and initial concentration. The removal rate of congo red reached to79.1% under adsorption time with 120 min, adsorbent dosage with 20 g/L, the solution with pH 6.The absorptive capacity of cotton shell was enhanced after being modified. The adsorption rate was controlled by surface diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. The adsorption of congo red on the modified cotton shell followed the Lagergren pseudo-second order kinetics equation, it was a chemical adsorption process.Modified cotton shell is inferred to be anadsorption of effective, stable andeconomic, which would used in the treatment of organic dyes waste water.
