Research and Exploration on Engineering Education Based on the Integration of Engineering and Maker Culture
In this era of internet, the students ways to access knowledge are becoming multiple and more convenient.Meanwhile, the new industrial revolution is booming across the world and rapidly changing the traditional production mode and the social lifestyle. Therefore, higher engineering education should replenish new contents, new concepts and new methods to adapt to the new conditions and new requirements.Obviously, the engineering culture based on the traditional engineering technology and engineering organization system has been difficult to meet the new demands of the new industrial revolution.Novertheless, the maker culture has increased due to the recent proliferation of affordable computing hardware and direct digital manufacturing technology, and available open source software.Firstly, the differences and connection between the engineering culture and the maker culture are described.Secondly, a new paradigm of engineering practice education is put forward based on the integration of engineering culture and maker culture. The new paradigm mainly includes three steps: technology-to-engineering, imitation-to-creation, innovation-to-production.Furthermore, an I-Lab series of experiment platform has been developed for multi-disciplinary students. Finally, the success cases are given and the problems which appeared in the course of implementation are analyzed.
