CAD/CAM Practicum Designed for Mass-customization Manufacturing Under the New Technological Revolution

In recent years, most leading manufacturing countries and companies in the world have started their new strategic plans to encourage and sponsor the development of next-generation manufacturing technology, such as German Industry 4.0 plan, American National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing, Chinese Made in China 2025 strategy and GEs initiative called The Industrial Internet. The world is getting into a new technological revolution.Current Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) courses are mainly designed based on the technology and thoughts of traditional mass production mode. However, the manufacturing mode is expected to turn to mass-customization mode under the new technological revolution. Therefore, the contents and modes of CAD/CAM education have to be adjusted to fit the requirements of new technological revolution. In this paper, a CAD/CAM practicum is designed to help students understand the basic ideas, thoughts and processes of customer co-design and mass-customization manufacturing. The proposed practicum mode can also train students with necessary knowledge and skills of CAD/CAM to fit the requirements of new technology revolution. Finally, an example of the practicum which is based on the development of a customer co-design based on CAD/CAM MATLAB toolkit for a computer mouse is presented, and the effectiveness of this practicum is discussed.
