Engineering Practice and Innovation Ability Development on CAD/CAM Subject

  This paper introduces the concept of CAD/CAM technology, and its importance and application to modem industry.The currently existing curriculum teaching methods, course contents and features of CAD/CAM are also introduced.The main features of this course include as follows: 1.Basic and systematic;2.Frontier;3.Practical.By analyzing the teaching contents and modes of world-class universities on CAD/CAM course, we know that our current curriculum mainly teaches the theoretical concepts in the classroom.The students are taught a lot of abstract knowledge in a short time, so it is difficult for the students to really digest and gain the ability to apply knowledge.Otherwise, some of the world-class universities such as Georgia Tech are more focused on the explanation of mathematical theory and the application of CAD/CAM knowledge.Therefore, the course should be based on the completion of basic education goals, put more emphasis on broadening students horizons, inspire innovation, and guide students to use the knowledge to participate in practice and finally let students complete of a simple engineering problem.This paper proposes that we should teach students CAD/CAM knowledge with some examples of applications to explain the CAD/CAM knowledge.Those examples should be throughout the teaching process.An example from our effort is presented as demonstration.
