Changes of Marital Status and Cognitive Function Predicted Institutionalization among Elders in China

Based on the 2002, 2005 and 2008 waves of Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey, sequential logistic regression method was used to examine risk factors of institutionalization among the elders in China considering both the baseline and the status change variables. The results showed that changes of marital status and cognitive function were significant predictors of institutionalization. The risk of institutionalization increased over 3 times if the married elders changed to unmarried during the period of three years.Compared to the elders whose cognitive function increased or remained, the likelihood of institutionalization for elders with declined cognitive function was doubled. At the baseline, predictors with significant evidence for institutionalization were the male, urban residents, the unmarried, those living alone, those who had less visiting children, those who had higher education level, and the cognitive impaired elders.Appropriate policies and programs should be implemented to improve the older peoples health as well as to develop community care system to support aging-in-place.
