Particle mechanics modeling of brittle behavior of rock specimens with an infilled flaw

Natural fractures often contain infilling materials, such as sheared-off or broken rock fragments and clay, and rock fractures can also be manually infilled by grout. Although a large number of studies focused on the strength and failure behavior of rock samples with open flaws, the progress of research on the mechanical properties and failure modes of rock specimens with infilled flaws has been slow. Particle mechanical method was used to study the brittle behavior and mechanical properties of rock specimens with a grout-infilled flaw under uniaxial compression testing. Compared with rock specimens with open flaws, the rock uniaxial compressive strengths and Youngs moduli of rock specimens with infilled flaws increase, and their Poissons ratios decrease. Grout plays a more significant role in improving the mechanical properties of pre-cracked rock specimens with inclination angles of flaws less than 45°. In terms of failure modes, grout can affect the crack initiation, propagation and coalescence patterns in rock specimens with infilled flaws.
