A Low-cost Method for Monitoring and Visualization of Small Displacements for Safety Management Using a Thin Bar
In recent years, a new concept of “On-site Visualization method has been proposed for monitoring safety for structures by visualizing the measured displacement as different colors of light to the nearby people simultaneously. Based on this concept, a mechanical method for monitoring small displacement is introduced in this paper. This method uses a steel bar with a diameter of 1mm sandwiched between two plates -one rigid plate and another movable plate- to monitor the relative movement between them. When a relative displacement occurs, the bar attached with a mini-flag will be mobilized to rotate by a certain angle. In another word, the small relative displacement can be visualized by the rotation of the flag. The fundamental experiments were carried out to verify the feasibility of this mechanical method. Finally, the applications of this method are discussed briefly.
