Design of interconnecting cross passage between two parallel highway tunnels
Twin parallel highway tunnels have been constructed on Jaipur-Agra highway (NH-11) in India. The tunnels are named as Ghat-ki-Guni tunnels and were excavated through jointed quartzites. To provide the escape route in emergency, the tunnels are interconnected at two locations by cross passage. In such highway tunnel projects, the interconnecting cross passage was first time designed and excavated at an angle of 30° from main tunnel creating a V-shaped rock wedge at the intersection. The support design of the intersection zone of main tunnels and cross passage having V-shaped rock wedge in both the tunnels was a challenging task, which has been successfully accomplished by using the numerical analysis and empirical Q-system discussed in the paper.
