Development of spot feeding on high speed DISAMATIC moulding lines
The production of cast parts with thinner wall sections and a more complex design is a continuous trend in the foundry market. As a result, castings have more isolated sections and as a result require spot feeding. While the application of highly exothermic spot feeders on horizontal greensand moulding lines is a common practise, this technology did not find its way into the vertically parted moulding process, due to technical limitations. To reach such isolated sections frequently requires the use of metal padding. This practise has the disadvantage of increasing cleaning costs and reducing yield. This paper describes the development and optimisation of a ram-up sleeve application technology using a patented collapsible metal core design, which can be located and moulded on a DISAMATIC moulding line without negatively affecting the cycle time.Automation of this process allows the commercial application of ram-up exothermic spot feeders to vertically parted greensand moulds.
