Theoretical Progress and Debates of the Contemporary Western Citizenship Theory

  Western citizenship theory has always been the center of the western political philosophy,but the liberalism theory dominated and over-emphasized the law rights of the individual.It viewed the law dimension as the core of citizenship and ignored the moral value and action of citizenship theory in two centuries.It resulted in many social problems, just as the decline of public spirit, many negative citizens in public sphere, etc.Based on the criticism of liberalism negative citizenship, the new republicanism and communitarianism point out the active citizenship should not be simply described as a single law dimension.Citizenship should be a combination of law, moral value, and action dimension.With the renaissance of the new republicanism and communitarianism and argument of three theory factions, western theorists are trying to revive civic responsibility and obligation and foster community identity.In essence, the progress and debates of citizenship theory has no essential difference, because they are trying to look for different methods to solve social problems.But we know,to clarify the theoretical progress and debates among the liberalism, new republicanism and communitarianism is to provide theoretical reference to China political development and the continuously rise of citizen participation in China public administration.
