Challenges Facing Universities Training Textiles Engineering Courses in Africa: Case of Moi University
This paper addresses the challenges that universities in Africa are facing when training textile engineering courses and seek to give solutions to address the problem.African textiles industries can improve its performance through effective human power development as the key to innovation if trade in textile and apparel has to meet the capacity in the current market competition.In our discussions we have highlighted several key challenges facing universities such as outdated and inadequate training facilities, inadequacy of staff, poor research facilities in engineering among others.The study recommends review on the training curriculum in order to enhance adequacy of skill training to skill needs in industries and business organizations and also need to build and strengthen institutions for research and development.Appropriate training programs for textile and apparel studies that entail design,production and marketing should be designed by universities and also textile incubator units targeting textile engineering and related fields of study should be established, which should be fully equipped with appropriate textile production units to enable fresh graduates develop their skills through collaboration efforts by the government and the private sector to provide adequate training.It is also recommended that universities in Africa should create a strong regional alliance with developed countries like China in order to share of expertise,information, marketing and current training in textiles production.
