Flaxseed Fiber Bundles as Reinforcement in Green Composites

Natural fiber reinforced composite materials have considerably become the center of interest recently due to the environmental legislation reforms as well as consumer awareness pressurizing the manufacturing industries to come up with sustainable substitutes for the conventional materials. This way, many novel and underutilized fiber sources could have the possible potential to become the new abundant fiber resource.Flaxseed fibers have shown completely different composition percentages of the constituents from the normal flax and exhibited acceptable properties after the alkali treatment. The objective of this paper is to further explore the potential of the flaxseed fiber bundles and make an attempt to fabricate the composites by using them as reinforcement and Polybutylene Succinate (PBS) as a matrix by compression molding. The composite samples were manufactured by both untreated and alkali treated flaxseed fiber bundles and their tensile strengths were subsequently analyzed and compared.SEM test was adopted to investigate the surface morphology of both untreated and treated composites. The alkali treated composites with improved surface roughness of the fiber bundles showed better matrix penetration and wetting of fiber bundles.Evaluation of the tensile property revealed acceptable results for samples treated with NaOH.However, it was observed that untreated composites had higher average tensile strength (78 MPa) as compared to NaOH treated (53.85 MPa).These findings showed the potential of both untreated and treated flaxseed fibers as a valuable reinforcement resource and provided the fundamental data for their possible applications in non-conventional textile applications, especially as reinforcement in green composite materials with comparable and acceptable properties.
