Hydrothermal Aging of Ramie Fiber/Polylactic Acid (PLA) Micro-composites
Nowadays, natural fiber reinforced composites are increasingly used in the automobile application. In this case, the effects of environmental changes on the mechanical properties of the composites become important and need to be investigated. In this study, the hydrothermal aging process is designed for the ramie fiber/PLA micro-composites.A series of design for the different temperature water and immersion time were set for the experimental. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the ramie and PLA was calculated by micro-bond pull-out test. The results showed that in distilled water, the IFSS for the ramie fiber/PLA micro-composites decreased by 41.6% and 61.3% for 20 ℃ and 40 ℃ respectively after 8100 minutes.FTIR results showed that after the immersion in water, the —OH group increased compared to the untreated sample. The SEM morphology showed that after the water immersion, the separation between the ramie fiber and PLA resin became more apparent, indicating the cohesive bonding between them were weaken due to the function of water immersion.
