Scope for China Mentorship for the Kenya Textile Industry

  This paper looks at the Kenya textile industry; tracing the history of the introduction of commodity fibres during the colonial times in the early 1900s.It looks at its structure during the times of colonial administration, its transformation and development immediately after independence, and its collapse from the 1990s World Trade Organizationtrade liberalization.The governments efforts to resuscitate it in the 2010s are looked at.The challenges the industry faces include policy environment outdated technology and low investment.China is a world leader in the production of textiles.China also produces textile machinery.China has institutions of higher learning where training necessary for running the industry in Kenya can be obtained.The opportunity for China to help develop Kenyas textile industry is therefore in three areas; training of manpower to run the industry and investing in the industry.China can provide scholarships for young Kenyans to train locally at Moi University and in China at Donghua University.China can also invest in textile manufacturing preferably joint ownership of enterprises.China can also provide access to merchandising networks
