Study of Interfacial Shear Strength between Carbon Fiber and Epoxy Resin through the Micro-bond and Fragmentation Test
Carbon fibers reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) is rapidly developed and applied as typical advanced composites due to its favorable mechanical and physical properties. The interfacial property between carbon fiber and resin is critical to the properties of CFRP.In this study, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between Carbon fiber and epoxy resin was investigated experimentally by the micro-bond test and fragmentation test. The results showed the IFSS between carbon fiber and epoxy resin was about 43 MPa by micro-bond test method, while the IFSS between carbon fiber and epoxy resin obtained a little higher value by using fragmentation test. The fracture pictures of the micro-bond and fragmentation tested samples were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and polarization microscope. The possible explanation for this difference was studied and discussed.
