Antibiotics distribution in the water and sediment phases in an effluent-receiving river : Role of organic carbon
Introduction Antibiotics are widely used as human and veterinary medicines to treat diseases and to promote growth in livestock and aquaculture operations thanks to their antibacterial properties (Yan et al.2013,HuLiu and Peng 2003).However,many antibiotics cannot be completely absorbed or metabolized,and a considerable fraction has been released into the environment.Thus,wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) often becomes a primary source of antibiotic compounds found in urban watersheds (McArdell et al.2003,Gibs et al.2013,Hirsch et al.1999,Karthikeyan and Meyer2006).
