Impact of Furan Moulding Sands on Structure of Castings Made of Spheroid (Nodular) Cast Iron
Contemporary technologies must face increasing demands which provide to receive high quality castings. Most of the castings are done in moulding sands, which also puts more and more demanding.Currently moulding sands should ensure receiving castings with high accuracy, smooth surface without external and internal defects. They should also have a dimensional stability also at the time of the molten alloy impact. The article is devoted to the impact of sulfur diffusing from self-hardening moulding sand with phenol-furfuryl resin into castings surface. The problem appears when casts are made from nodular iron. The diffusing sulfur may cause creating distorted spheroid graphite in the casting surface layer. The adverse influence of sulfur on the structure of iron castings was proved. As a result of diffusion of sulfur from a moulding material to the casting surface it was observed appearance of sulfiding layer. In case of nodular iron castings, the distorted spheroid graphite was also observed in the surface layer.
