Systematic Evaluation of Heat Stress Impact and Selection of Abatement Systems

Heat stress caused by hot weather conditions is well known to result in swine production and growth declines.Heat abatement systems commonly applied to provide supplemental cooling include evaporative cooling pad and sprinkler cooling systems.Evaporative cooling pad systems are usually preferred over sprinkler cooling systems because the animal living space stays dryer with pad systems. However, evaporative cooling pad systems do not always provide sufficient cooling in all weather conditions and climatic locations. The challenge has always been to know when a producer should use a sprinkler system instead of an evaporative cooling pad type system.A method has been developed to use location specific weather data to determine the duration and severity of heat stress conditions. This method can also determine the effectiveness of cooling resulting from the use of an evaporative cooling pad system, using a heat stress hours (HSH) procedure. The output from the overall procedure determines one of three operational scenarios for supplemental cooling needs based on weather data for a given location: (1) no supplemental cooling even though heat stress conditions exist in the afternoon;(2) supplemental cooling is needed and can be adequately provided by implementing an evaporative cooling pad system; (3) supplemental cooling is needed and a sprinkler cooling system should be implemented rather that an evaporative cooling pad system. The duration of cooling system use can also be determined by conducting the HSH procedure.
