Effects of Air Temperature, Velocity and Floor Type on Gaseous Emissions from a Scale Model of Dairy Open Lots

In typical Chinese dairy housing and manure management system, outdoor open lot is an important emission source of contaminant gases. In this study, dairy open lot scale models were built to evaluate effects of air temperature (15 to 35℃), surface velocity (0.4 to 1.2 m s-1) and floor type (unpaved soil floor or brick-paved floor) on CO2, CH4, N2O and NH3 emissions.Generally, CO2, N2O and NH3 emissions increased with the increasing of air temperature and velocity on both unpaved soil and brick-paved floors.Velocity showed different impacts on CH4emissions from different floor types. There was a drop on CH4 emissions from brick floor when velocity kept increasing and the drop would be delayed by air temperature. No similar drop was found from soil floor under the examined velocities.Except methane, other gaseous emissions were more sensible to changes at lower velocity (0.4 to 0.7 m s-1) or lower air temperature (15 to25℃).Gaseous emissions from soil floor were more sensible to velocity changes while the emissions from brick floor were more sensible to air temperature changes.Higher NH3emissions were measured on brick-paved floor. In comparison with NH3 emission, CO2 and CH4emissions were less affected by floor type.
