Computational Fluid Dynamics Analyzing the Air Velocity in a Mechanically-Ventilated Broiler Housing
With the improvements that the environmental control of broiler houses in Brazil there is a need for an alternative and more precise ventilation system.The objective of this study is to evaluate the current ventilation system to a commercial farm for broilers and propose a more efficient ventilation system to determine how many exhaust fans and in which positions should be located for a homogenous and efficient ventilation inside the barn, using the software Ansys(R)CFX 14.The study was conducted in a broiler house located in Amparo/Sao Paulo.The study was done in a tunnel ventilated broiler house totally enclosed with brick side walls.The climatic and environmental conditions were monitored at 2 PM when the birds were 42 days in summer conditions of 2012.Data were collected at 27 equidistant points such as: dry bulb temperature and air velocity, through a hot wire anemometer, relative humidity with a hygrometer and static pressure with a manometer.The control conditions are: inlet air velocity, inlet air temperature,outlet air velocity, outlet air temperature and the static pressure next to the exhaust fans.The geometry was made using the software Ansys(R) Workbench 14.0, the meshes were evaluated by the elements, numbers of node, aspect ratio, element quality and skewness.The validation was done, and a normalised mean square error value (NMSE) of 0.18 was obtained, meaning a good indicator.The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique was an effective and feasible method to display the airflow pattern under different operating conditions for exhaust fans in 2D and 3D, as well as to determine the best arrangement of exhaust fans in operation to avoid the areas with low speed and turbulence zone.The best results were observed in simulation 6 where almost all the fans were turned on in the bottom of the building.
