Measurement of Thermal Environment Uniformity within High Density Stacked-Cage Layer House

High density laying hen production system using eight stacked cages and manure belt is becoming popular in China.Although the system is widespread in USA and some other western countries, it is relatively new in China. The distributions of ventilation and thermal environment within the production facilities are still of big concerns due to the extensive barn size and high bird density. In this study, a field test was carried out to measure the temperature, wind speed, carbon dioxide concentration and their distributions within a newly built barn with cross ventilation system in Shanxi Province in January 2015.The thermal environment was evaluated based on these measurements. The results showed that for horizontal direction, the average temperature variations were 5.67±0.46℃, 2.76±0.29℃, and 3.11±0.49℃ at the first, fifth, and seventh cage heights, respectively. For vertical direction, the temperature variations between first and 8th cage heights were 3.63±0.72℃, 1.30±0.46℃, and 4.09±1.44℃ at the cooling pad, middle of the house, and exhaust fan sections, respectively. The highest diurnal temperature difference was as high as 9℃.The average wind speed at the exhaust fan and first cage height areas were too high: 0.36±0.07 m/s and 0.32±0.07 rn/s respectively, which were both higher than the recommended threshold of 0.25 m/s.This paper provides an evaluation of environmental control technology and management in a high density stacked-cage-raising layer house.
