Overview of United States and European Union Manure Management and Application Regulations
This paper presents an overview of current manure management guidelines and manure application regulations in the United States and the European Union.A review of current United States and European Union regulations with discussion on the challenges faced regarding the development and implementation of these regulations can provide valuable insight in regards to developing regulations in other locations that protect the environment while allowing for continued growth of the poultry and livestock sectors.This paper provides a review of the existing regulatory frameworks currently in place in both the United States and the European Union as well as comparisons of manure storage guidelines as well as manure nutrient regulations.Regulation related to land application in regards to manure application setbacks,manure application methods, application timing as well as nitrogen and phosphorus management and application limits are discussed.A review of regulatory approaches that have been successful as well as those that have proven to be cost prohibitive or challenging to implement will be discussed.
