Dealing with Airborne Transmission of Animal Diseases-A Review
This paper presents a review of the research advances in airborne transmission of animal diseases.Airborne transmission is an important route of animal disease transmission. In contrast to transmission by direct and indirect contact, airborne transmission is less understood and much more difficult to deal with. Most biosecurity measures for preventing animal disease spread have been focused on direct and indirect contact, with little consideration of airborne transmission.Airborne transmission of animal diseases involves several complicated biological and physical processes, including pathogen shedding and aerosolization, atmospheric dispersion of pathogen-laden aerosols, decay of aerosolized pathogens in the atmosphere, and initiation of infection. Our understanding of airborne transmission of diseases is still limited. Some technologies, such as filtration and air ionization, for reducing and preventing airborne transmission of animal diseases are promising.
