Modeling Disinfection of Vehicle Tires Inoculated with Enteric Pathogens on Animal Farms Using Response Surface Methodology

To reduce the risk of enteric pathogens transmission and drug residues in animal farms, the disinfection effectiveness of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW, pH 5.85-6.53) for inactivating Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis mixture on the surface of vehicle tires was evaluated. The coupled effects of the tap water washing time (2 to 4 min), SAEW treatment time (3-7 min) and available chlorine concentrations (ACCs) of 80 to 140 mg/1 on the reductions of E.coli and S.enteritidis mixture on tires were investigated using a central composite design of the response surface (RS) methodology. The established RS model had a goodness of fitting quantified by the parameters of R2 (0.984), lack of fit test (P > 0.05).The maximum reduction of 1.38 logl0 CFU/cm2 (92.9%) for E.coli and S.enteritidis mixture was obtained by the vehicle tire treated with 4 min tap water washing for followed by 5 rain SAEW treatment for at an ACC of 140 mg/l.The established RS model shows the potential of SAEW in disinfection of bacterial cells on tires.
