Technical Resources for Swine Production Systems in the U.S.
The swine production industry in the US has gone through a lot of changes in the last few decades. In order to stay competitive, the swine operations and their managers are experts in using improved breeding stock to grow pigs faster and produce leaner pork with less feed and pollution.Climate-controlled buildings, computerized information systems, and excellent disease control programs are just some of the tools needed to stay on top of business. There have been useful resources that are helpful to provide consideration of either starting or expanding a swine enterprise, determining type of operation that best meet ones management and production goals. This paper discusses important topics to be covered when designing or improving an operation, and highlights some available publications, websites, and models. The resources provide critical information and insight that might be required as part of a business plan for producers considering different types and sizes of pork production systems. For example, the Missouri Swine Enterprise Manual provides suggestions and recommendations to enhance pork production, including: breeding, genetics, economics, health, nutrition, meat quality, structures, ventilation, and environmental nutrient management. There are many examples of different types and sizes of sample operations, each was presented as a SWOT analysis (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat). It is important to make the information available to stakeholders and producers who can benefit from them, to avoid duplicating the effort, and more importantly, to keep improving the production systems for a better environment and better profitability.
