Application of Optical Character Recognition Technology to Patient Monitors Accessing to Internet of Things
Objective: To capture the alarms and vital signs from the old model monitors by applying optical character recognition technology and store the extracted information on network for real time access and further application of Internet of Things. Methods: Original monitors of three models of two brands were selected to adapt the methods. The video outputs were captured by video collection cards and recognized by an optical character recognition (OCR)server, after which the information acquired was stored in online database for real time access. Results: The safety tests observed no risk of failure rate increasing caused by the introduced system. The interested information from static images and real time video were all captured with 100 percent accuracy. Conclusion: By using OCR technology, the alarms and vital signals are acquired, structured and archived, which makes the real time access of data from original monitors via intranet possible.Several practical applications have been developed based on the system, and more promising applications are under development.
