The mechanism and control measures of rib spalling and roof falls in fully mechanized top-coal caving longwall face
The coalface and roof structural characteristics in the unsupported distance of fully mechanized top-coal caving longwall face under different seam conditions of coal seam are analyzed.The common failure types of oof in unsupported distance are block structural instability and bulk structural instability; the common failure types of coalface are compression shear slip spalling, split spalling and transverse arch spalling.A technical approach for improving roof and coalface stability by optimizing the state of stress: reduce the areas of surrounding rock without confining pressure, reduce the coalface supporting stress and increase horizontal squeezing force of roof in the longitudinal direction is proposed.It also proposed that rib spalling and roof falls can be prevented by avoiding the inclined caving face and making the full use of support..
