Hybrid finite-discrete element modelling of asperity shearing and gouge arching in rock joint fracturing
A hybrid finite-discrete element method is implemented to model the asperity shearing and gouge arching during the direct shearing of rough rock joints. The modelled results reproduce the asperity sliding, damage, shearing and post-peak failure processes in the direct shear test of rock joints with various roughness profiles. It is concluded that the hybrid finite-discrete element method is a valuable numerical tool for studying rock joint fracturing.
