Advanced Arc Protection Relay as the Main Busbar Protection in the MV Switchboards of the Substation
Minimizing the operational personnels injury and the damage to the power equipment when arc flash faults occur in MV switchboards have always been major concerns to the utilities protection engineers.However, for various reasons, until now almost no main busbar protections have been employed in the MV switchboards of the substations in China.In the past 10 years the new arc protection relays and technology have been introduced and installed in various MV switchboards of the substations throughout China.Experiences and operational results are gained and have shown that the arc protection can be used as the main busbar protection in the MV switchboards of the substations,particularly for personnel safety purpose to upgrade the existing MV switchboards of the substations.However, the light detection and its reliability, the selectivity and suitability for various system earthing arrangements have been the major concerns by the utilities engineers.In order to better use this new arc protection relays and technology, a working group to standardize the arc protection relay and technology has been formed and worked on the draft standard Specification for Arc Protection Equipment by Chinese National Standard Technical Committee for Measuring Relays and Protection Devices (SAC/TC154).This paper describes the key issues and discussions related to the arc protection technology standardization, such as the light sensing methods and its testing procedures.Key protections issues, such as recommendations of current and light settings, reliability of the light sensors, selectivity of the arc protection, the comparison with the traditional busbar differential protection relays etc.are also discussed and addressed in this paper.Advanced features and functions, such as self-monitoring not only on the continuality of the light sensor and its fiber optical links but also for the detection of the light intensity reduction of the sensor due to various reasons, such as heavy dust coverage, are also discussed.
