Study on Fault Characteristics of Multi-send HVDC System and its Impact on Protection

  When fault occurs in the AC system, the HVDC control system responses quickly and determines HVDC operating point, which makes the fault characteristics of HVDC system different from traditional AC system, and HVDC system will influence the action characteristics of protections in the AC-DC interconnected system, For the single-send and multi-send HVDC systems, the HVDC equivalent characteristics under different fault conditions are analyzed in the paper, and the influence of HVDC system on distance protection based on variation of power-frequency components and current differential protection are derived.It is showed that the protection range of distance protection reduces greatly and the sensitivity of steady component current differential protection decreases under certain conditions.At last, simulation results of single-send and three-send HVDC system using PSCAD/EMTDC testify the conclusions correctness
