Implementation of a Wide Area Monitoring Scheme for the Indian Power System
India, with one of the most extensive power transmission networks in the world with an installed capacity in excess of 220GW, initiated the largest wide area measurement project in the world more than a year ago.Through the deployment of phasor measurement units compliant with the latest synchrophasor standards and a tiered control centre/phasor data concentrator architecture,Indias transmission operator plans to capitalize on the high resolution, real-time data to enhance system visibility/situational awareness and enhance the post-mortem analysis of grid disturbances.Other benefits foreseen are the detection and analysis of low frequency oscillations, islanding detection and dynamic model validation. The paper details the wide area monitoring solution being rolled out across the Indian grid, highlighting its key elements and functionality.
