Wide Area Monitoring and Control for Power Grid Low Frequency Oscillation Problem

The Low frequency oscillation is one of the major threats to the security of the large interconnected power grid, which can potentially lead to unstable system operation with major consequences. This paper proposed an integrated online low frequency oscillation monitoring and control system, which can fulfill: First, the weak damping during the normal operation can be recognized in time with pre-alarming message released and some preventive control executed; When oscillation occurs, wide area multiple HVDC modulation control or wide area PSS control can take action to improve the damping level during the power oscillation event; For some sustained oscillation, oscillation energy based oscillation source location is utilized, and some accurate commands such as generator disconnection or control mode switching can be taken.System implementation is presented and some examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness.
