Coordinated Voltage Control of a Doubly-fed Induction Generator-based Wind Power Plant Using a Voltage Change

This paper proposes a coordinated voltage control of a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind power plant (WPP) that modifies a measured voltage signal to enable the WPP to suppress the overvoltage at a point of interconnection(POI) and DFIG terminal voltage after a fault clearance. To do this, the terminal voltage change of a DFIG is monitored at every predefined time period for detect the fault clearance. If the voltage change exceeds a set-value, the measured voltage is modified using the step function at the voltage regulators in the DFIG controllers. The step function hdps DFIG controller to rapidly suppress the overvoltage within an allowed range at a fault clearance. The performance of the proposed scheme was validated for a model system consisting of 20 units of a 5 MW DFIG considering the various scenarios such as fault and wind conditions using an EMTP-RV simulator. The test results show that the proposed scheme enables a WPP to suppress the overvoltage at the POI and DFIG terminal voltage within a short time under a grid fault condition.
