Stepwise Inertial Control to Prevent Over-Deceleration
A stepwise inertial control (SIC) scheme of a wind turbine generator (WTG) instantly increases the power output to arrest the frequency drop when a disturbance occurs; however, the output should be reduced after a preset period to prevent over-deceleration (OD) ; therefore, a second frequency dip might be caused. This paper proposes an SIC scheme to improve the frequency nadir (FN) while preventing OD.To improve the FN,the power reference is defined as a constant, which is determined by considering the power margin and available kinetic energy and maintained until the FN.To prevent OD, after the FN, the power reference slowly decays with the rotor speed. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated under various wind conditions using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results clearly indicate that the proposed scheme increases the FN while preventing OD.
