A Novel Directional Comparison Pilot Protection for Hybrid HVDC Transmission Lines Based on Fault Traveling Wave Energy
The hybrid high voltage direct current (HVDC)system with a line commutated converter (LCC) on the rectifier side and a voltage source converter (VSC) on the inverter side combines the advantages of the two kinds of converter and has broad prospects in many application fields. In order to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of the hybrid HVDC system, a novel directional comparison pilot protection for transmission line is proposed in this paper. The major element of the proposed protection is the directional unit based on the fault-generated traveling wave energy.According to the different reflection characteristics at each end, the threshold values at each end are set differently.Extensive fault simulation results show that the proposed protection scheme not only discriminate the internal fault accurately but has adequate sensitivity to high transition resistance as well.
