Control and Protection Sequence of an Offshore Integrated MMC MTDC System with Master-Slave/Droop Cotrol under Converter AC-Side Fault

This paper investigates an offshore wind farm(OWF) integrated modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based HVDC system under an AC fault condition. This fault occurs at the AC-side of an MMC which performs as the master converter to maintain the DC voltage of the MTDC grid.Based on the systematic analysis under the fault condition, a comprehensive control and protection sequence, which includes (i) fault isolation;(ii) adjustment of the control mode of the MMCs; (iii) recovery of the unfaulted terminals, is proposed.Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using simulations on the real-time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. The simulation results demonstrate that the system is well protected following the fault, one of the unfaulted terminals takes over the role of the DC voltage control and then the unfaulted terminals resume in a smooth manner with small overvoltage and current surges using the proposed sequence. The control and protection sequence for MMC MTDC system with voltage droop control under the same fault condition is also discussed and validated on the RTDS.
